Cool Yule Bazaar

It's time for our annual Cool Yule Bazaar.

Think of it as a cozy one day indoor art fair. Talented local artists and inventive artisans will be offering their handcrafts for this special one day bazaar.

This year we will be one of the participants in the Art Trail sponsored by the

Sylvania Community Arts Commission. Pick up a map at the gallery and visit all nine artist studios and galleries on the art trail and enter to win this beautiful Jim Yarrito glass work.

Come visit our bazaar as we weave our delightful Holiday magic.

Exhibit Installation

We received the work for our upcoming exhibit this past Thursday afternoon. Our plan was to get the show checked in and place a few pieces. The work was so inspiring we decided to stay late and install the entire show.

Great Read

Wonderful post by Lee Gaizak Brooks in The Glass Quarterly Hot Sheet regarding Scott Darlington's glass hammer on display in the area artists exhibit at the TMA.
And, in my opinion the most remarkable piece in the current exhibit.

Taking a first place award at the 92nd Toledo Area Artists Exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art (and on display through August 22nd), Scott Darlington’s Genetically Modified Corn Hammer (2010) may be one of the artist’s most compelling works to date. New Gallery Artist - Ladislav Hanka

We have introduced new gallery artist Ladislav Hanka to many of you over the past few months. And, your response has been overwhelmingly positive to his skillful and amazing etchings.

Brook Trout I

We have just received these gorgeous etchings of native Michigan Brook trout. Brook trout require cool, spring fed streams and pools. They can be found under cover of rocks, logs and undercut stream banks.

"Bodies of water and their rivers of fish are a truly foreign realm, where we are but the most temporary of visitors. As I glance into the world of fish, with its own physiology and rules and an emotional life that I will never share, their disinterested distance is fascinating. We matter little to the fish, except as predators to avoid. My world here, above the waves, seems, in large part, to be ordered, recorded, managed, documented, confirmed, verified, catalogued and somewhere totted up, preserved on a hard drive and numb. It is a breathtaking gift when the sacred unexpectedly shows one of its myriad faces - coming in from that mysterious other place to break the spell. When I peer into the water and a salmon emerges, I awaken from the circuitous worries about money or how things are going to hell in a hand basket. I feel blessed. One moment the salmon is just an unremarkable shadow in my peripheral vision and in the next, a flashing window onto a parrallel, timeless world."

These fine etchings are perfect examples of Hanka's mastery of technique and shine light upon his deep love and respect for the subject. If you have a place in your heart for trout and all the beauty and life that surround them you'll want to see these glorious prints.

Group of 9

We're happy to let you know our third Group of 9 exhibition is now installed. Amazing that this, our third G9 show now totalling 27 local artists continues to grow. Northwest Ohio is so full of wonderful, diverse artists that continue producing fabulous pieces in all media. Our list of artists for future shows is never in doubt. The current show has paintings, prints, glass, ceramics and drawings and runs through the end of July.

Big Top

As perhaps yet another nod towards the wonderful book, "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen this current show at the Ohio Art Council's Riffe Gallery has grabbed my attention. The exhibit, Sawdust and Spectacle: Under the Big Top in Small Town America is showing now through April 21, 2010. We've not yet had a chance to see the show but I still wanted to bring it to your attention/calendar. The book left such an impression on me that when I see anything circus related, especially early 20th century, I'm immediately hooked. We're planning to see it in mid March; can't wait. There's something about this imagery that's simultaneously nostalgic and creepy that always draws me in. If you get the chance to see it let us know what you think.

Skot Horn Reception

What a wonderful reception, here's a few photo's. Thanks to all who attended. And, thanks to Skot for all his efforts producing such an amazing body of work. At a recent City Council meeting, Robin Ballmer (our former executive director) received a proclamation from Mayor Nelson Evans of Perrysburg. Robin was commended for her hard work in bringing arts and culture to the Perrysburg area.

Congratulations Robin! We continue to appreciate everything you do for the Perrysburg Area Arts Council!

Here is the content of the Proclamation:
Whereas, the arts and cultural activities enhance and enrich the lives of every citizen of Perrysburg, and;Whereas, the arts and cultural activities play a unique educational role in the lives of our families, and our community, and;Whereas, the arts and cultural activities serve to inspire creativity, imagination and inventiveness, and:Whereas, the not-for-profit Perrysburg Area Arts Council cultural advocacy organization provides quality art programs for the entire community, beautifying our environment and strengthening our economy by attracting visitors to our City, thereby generating revenue for area businesses, and serving the greater good, and;Whereas, Robin Ballmer, past Executive Director of the Perrysburg Area Arts Council, brought about a remarkable increase in public art exhibits, youth theatre, musical programming and other visionary cultural contributions over the course of her nine-year tenure; NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED, that I, Nelson Evans, Mayor of the City of Perrysburg, due hereby proclaim January 19, 2010, be observed as Robin Ballmer Day, and call upon our citizens to celebrate and promote the arts and culture in our community. Toledo Museum of Art's Travel Scholarship

Students of art are encouraged to apply now for the Palmer Scholarship awarded by the Toledo Museum of Art. The application deadline for this art travel award is January 29, 2010. The Palmer Scholarship provides funding for travel for an individual(s) to pursue a course of study in an art-related field. The award recipient(s) will receive up to $8,000 toward the costs of travel—including airfare, hotel and meal expenses—either domestic or abroad, to enhance studies in an art-related field. Project examples include advancing creative skills, conducting research, and studying educational techniques. Applicants must reside in Northwest Ohio. The award recipient(s) must complete the travel within one year of notification. Awards will be announced in March 2010.
